Grant
Thomas was born and raised in Markham. He has been interested
in art since the mid-seventies. Fueled by his high school art
classes and a love of drawing, he entered Sheridan College's
reknownd Illustration course - then located in Brampton, Ontario.
Majoring - and receiving an honors diploma - in Technical Illustration,
Grant's style became more polished and detailed. A strong commercial
look resulted in his style and he began to specialize in automobile
and architectural renderings.
In 1989 Grant began his graphics
a career at Tele-direct (Publications) Inc. However, he continued
to show interest in drawing cars. For six years he also freelanced
for a motorsport company in Stouffville, creating T-shirt illustrations
and logo designs for in-town racers as well as for General Motors,
Scott Goodyear, Paul Tracy, Dale Earnhardt and Charlotte Motorspeedway.
Commissions for home or cottage portraits also became common.
Grant was introduced to Computer
Graphics at Sheridan College. Tele-direct, however, gained the
spark into a keen interest. The Macintosh computer soon became
a asset in his freelance work expanding his use and accuracy
of typography.
In the past two years six pieces
were selected as finalists for The Automotive Journalists Association
of Canada's Art of the Automobile presentation at the International
Car Show in Toronto. The watercolour 512 S was highlighted in
the most recent show.
Presently, Tele-Direct continues
to forward Grant's computer design skills but he has forgone
the freelancing to concentrate on Automotive Art - Ferraris and
Formula One being his favorite subjects.
Grant still accepts commissions
- both of automotive and/or architectural subjects.
